About Liberty

Hello, I'm Joseph P. Coleman, PhD. I founded Liberty Psychological Services in 2020. I am a fully licensed, doctoral-level psychologist in New Jersey and New York. My passion is helping you surprise yourself.
________________
My dream of becoming a psychologist began in high school, when I discovered that one can make a career of empathic listening. My love of being a reliable listener fueled my subsequent study and training. I earned my undergraduate degree in 2011 from SUNY College at Brockport. I then attended the University of Detroit Mercy, where I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2017. My doctoral training was intensive; it included years of practice in therapy clinics, universities, and hospitals. My skills in anxiety management, emotional regulation, and therapy for chronic pain are a direct result of this training.
I approach therapy in a simple way: I want to know how your anxiety fuels vicious circles in your life. As you avoid confronting your anxiety and emotions, your problems get worse, producing more emotional upset. Together, we use our therapeutic relationship as a template for how to break these cycles. We focus on our interactions; we don't just sit back and make guesses at the intentions of others in your life. With this refreshed self-understanding, you feel empowered to test your assumptions and expand your sense of self.
Between our sessions, I think about our next steps and how I can help you get the most out of
treatment. You are my focus. As part of my fee, I offer visual and written learning tools that I develop and tailor to you and your treatment. Care coordination services (i.e., speaking with your psychiatrist, physician, loved ones) are also included in my fee. These enhance our collaboration in therapy and the overall effectiveness of my work with you.
________________
I offer presenting, speaking, and consulting services to groups who wish to learn more about my unique approach to treatment and my focus on anxiety and emotional management. I love providing a glimpse into the therapy and coaching world, while offering refreshing views on common psychological concerns, such as anxiety, emotional regulation, relationships & communication, and chronic pain.
Liberty is now offering skills coaching for anxiety management. Coaching is a passion of mine, and I have seen how a lack of healthy anxiety management skills can stand in the way of personal and professional fulfillment.
Surprise yourself.
